What's a GIF?
The word 'GIF' has been in use for quite a while on the Internet, and stands for Graphics Interchange Format. GIFs are commonly used to show animated pictures, or short sections of video, without audio. The file format can support up to 256 colors, so sometimes, loss of quality can become noticeable. Also, the word is meant to be pronounced with a soft 'j' as in 'jif,' such as the brand of peanut butter.
One of the main problems with GIFs is that they cannot be resized. Resizing the image simply causes it to display the first frame in its sequence, instead of playing its animation. They can be constructed frame-by-frame in certain programs, such as Adobe Photoshop. |
